In April 2008, the Italian government approved a major reform of mental health care for mentally ill offenders. Up until then the six Ospedales Psichiatrici Giudiziari (OPG; Forensic Psychiatric Hospitals) fell completely under the responsibility of the Ministry of Justice and policy, regulations, staff management, careers, budget, etc. were completely organised at a national level. The UHPP is the unit of reference for psychiatric patients of the prison population of Catalonia. It provides services to adults suffering from a mental illness who are subject to the closed prison regime. It is a unit with 67 beds divided into three departments with 24-hour emergency care: Acute Unit, Subacute Unit & Rehabilitation Unit. On October 28th the COST Action will visit the Residenze per la Esecuzione della Misura di Sicurezza (REMS) in Volterra. The REMS are small-size residential facilities for maximal 20 patients and have been developed recently to better meet the needs of providing intensive and high quality mental healthcare under proper secure conditions.
